How to Host a Magical Nutcracker Christmas Party

There’s something truly magical about the Nutcracker at Christmastime—the twinkling lights, whimsical sweets, toy soldiers, and dreamy holiday colors make it the perfect inspiration for a festive celebration! Every magical Christmas celebration starts with the perfect invitation! Decorations:

Now for the fun part—the decorations! Bring the magic of the Nutcracker to life with festive details inspired by toy soldiers, sugar plums, candy, and all the whimsy of the Land of Sweets. A few themed touches can easily transform your party space into a magical Christmas celebration.

I love to add a welcome sign to great my guests. Instead of using chalk this year, I decided to do removable vinyl for my signs. These signs were easy to create on my cricut and place on the chalkboard. I also added a 'goodbye' sign. At the end of the Nutcracker, Clara finds herself alone in her room wondering, "Was it all a dream?". I wanted my guests to leave wondering that the reason they had such a great time could be because it was all just a "dream"!

Now onto the my favorite part, the dining room. I chose classic plaid tablecloth, live evergreen branches and nutcracker themed accessories of course!

The plates and napkins I used are from My Mind's Eye. The scalloped plates are still available unfortunately the napkins are not but they have some great alternatives like these:

For an extra special touch, I decorated throughout the party with some of the old nutcrackers my mother used to collect, adding a little nostalgia and meaning to the celebration. For other decor on the table I found gold nutcracker tapers, acrylic cups (that were also used as party favors) and treat boxes from Home Goods. They always have so many great items for parties this time of year! Here are some great online alternatives:

Now onto the drink and treat bar! I reused my giant bow from a past party for the top of the bar area. I wanted to cover the cupboards as much as possible and curtains were the perfect thing. I felt they represented the curtains from the ballet! I hung metal nutcracker signs to cover the handles of the doors. Hanging from the front is a felt garland, I believe I got it from Hobby Lobby or Michaels. Here are some options I have found online:

Lastly, the island decorations. I added a table runner, topped with greenery. Then displayed these felt nutcracker decorations from Target. I also wanted to show off the cute nutcracker ornaments I had found so I added one of my smaller gold trees and placed it inside a metal toy soldier bucket. I not only added nutcracker ornaments but I wanted to incorporate food that went along with each country in the Land of Sweets. Like Green Tea for China, Chocolates for Spain, Candy Canes for Russia, etc. I found these at Michaels, Hobby Lobby and Walmart.

Activities:

Then we kept the holiday fun going with a few Nutcracker-themed activities! We started with a 'create your own nutcracker ornament' to give guests a chance to get creative! I love that even though they are all high schoolers they still will make crafts at my parties, lol. Here is my blog describing the craft and how the ornaments were personalized to each guest.

After the craft I hosted a Nutcracker trivia game which was a fun way to see who knows the classic Christmas story best! Of course there was a prize for the family with the most correct answers!

Food/Drinks:

No Christmas party is complete without some festive treats! I carried the Nutcracker theme into my menu with themed dinner items, sweet treats, and a holiday drink inspired by the Land of Sweets. This is an easy—and delicious—way to add even more magic to your celebration.

For the main meal, I wanted to incorporate all the countries from the Land of Sweets. I also wanted to do something a little different than years past. We have never done soup so that is what I chose. Each family brought a soup that would be likened to something from Russia, Spain, China and Arabia (since there was only 4 families).

For instance we had Lemon Garlic Chicken Soup and Pita bread for Arabia, Potato Soup for Russia, Egg Drop for China and White Chicken Chili for Spain. It was such a fun twist to our normal menu!

Lastly for food, we have drinks and desserts! One of our guests is an amazing baker and she made these homemade salted caramel cupcakes for us. All I had to do was add nutcracker shaped candies that I made using a mold similar to this with green and red melting candies. They turned out so cute!

Dress the part:

Over the years we have always enjoyed dressing with the theme of the party. All the families dress up and it adds some extra fun! I was a sugar plum fairy and I made my husband a t-shirt that resembled a toy soldier.

And just like Clara waking up and wondering if her magical adventure was all a dream, your Nutcracker Christmas party will hopefully leave guests feeling like they stepped into a little holiday wonderland of their own.
